Founded in 1865, The Marin Frnch Cheese Company is the original producer of California Brie and Camembert.
With so much to say about the fast growing artisan cheese industry in this area, it's good to remember where it all started in the region. And the folks at the cheese factory are dedicated as ever to producing a wonderful range of delicious varieties.
A quick 15 minute road trip by car or (a little bit longer and more strenuous) by bike out West from Petaluma, the cheese factory's a pretty ideal, little pit-stop en-route to Point Reyes, with its picturesque picnic grounds and fishing pond.
Stopping in for a mini ice cream the other day I was happy to find a sale on petite 40z cheeses, with an extra round of brie thrown in at the register. With cheese prices typically so steep for the locally made, I came out with quite a bag full of bargains.
Tours are currently on hold but once remodeling has been completed, they'll be offered again seven days a week, starting at 10 am, 11, noon and 3 pm.
Meanwhile, a good selection of wine is available for purchase along with deli sandwiches and of course, cheese galore (with quite a selection from other artisan producers in the area) making impromptu picnicking a breeze.
