Former Petaluman and fellow journalist Helen Pitt was a regular at Aqus Cafe down at Foundry Wharf when she lived here in town. I'd heard of Helen for quite some time. "You should meet her," I'd been told on numerous occasions by mutual friends and acquaintances. For one because we both share 'accents'. Not the same accent, mind you. Though Helen's from the opposite side of the world, there is an undeniable shared sense of scrabbled culture between the Brits and the Aussies and something of a similar sensibility.
I was introduced to Pitt at Aqus shortly before she moved home to her native Australia. Although our paths never crossed except for that one occasion when she was living here in the same home town, in reading her warm and personal account of the two Petaluma's, I'm glad that we can all share in this informative piece, her continued connection to the place she clearly holds dear.
