Sonoma County's greatest little consignment store has experienced a big-time makeover for the new year - by relocating from a low-profile position off Petaluma's busy East Washington Street to the heart of bustling downtown Petaluma.
Doors opened today, Saturday January 16th, as savvy shoppers and eager, long-time customers were literally glued to the windows of Red Umbrella Consignment Store at 120 A Kentucky Street for a first look at the store's bright and breezy womens clothing, jewelry, accessories and stylish household furnishings.
Enterprising partners, Margaret Villarreal and sister Dana Pritchard (pictured above with Margaret's daughter, store assistant, Allie Villarreal) impressed me with their impeccable taste in a refreshing range of eclectic, quality vintage and nearly-new merchandise artfully arranged amidst hand painted pieces of furniture, custom upholstery and antique pieces from Brazil.
This is the business model for the modern-day market, if you ask me. There's a tremendous value in restored furnishings that fit today's blended style of new and recycled interior decor.
Key to the stores success being that the girls at Red Umbrella insist on consignment items being of appeal to the contemporary shopper. ""We're interested in bright, light and cheerful pieces, as opposed to antiques that could have come from your grandma's house," explained Margaret. "Though some classic pieces do fit our range."
Hand painted, reclaimed and salvaged wooden furniture such as armoires, coffee tables and trunks from Brazil make up a portion of the store's higher-end items, alongside stunning custom upholstery such as the colorful pheasant sofa pictured above by Novato artist Melissa Stanbro Cavener.
Glazed furnishings and pretty, decoupage accent pieces by talented Petaluman Felice Charlton are dotted around the brick-walled store, conveniently positioned right next to i Leoni housewares.
If you're thinking of consigning clothing, it must have been purchased within the last couple of years, be in mint condition and freshly laundered to be free of any perfumes.
Send photos and descriptions of any items you'd like to be considered for consignment to redumbrella1@sbcglobal.net.
Red Umbrella is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday 12 noon to 4pm. Thanks, ladies, for giving us another reason to stroll our friendly and increasingly fashionable downtown. Red Umbrella will bring in fashionista foot-traffic from all over the Bay Area as it hits its stride in such a stylish, spacious and welcoming downtown locale.
Known for our plethora of antique stores, Petaluma is pumping up a reputation for superb resale items with several smaller consignment stores having popped up around town in the past couple of months.

Thanks so much for your great review of Red Umbrella Consignment's new and improved location. Our opening day was a great success. Here's a tiny edit on our e-mail address: redumbrella1@sbcglobal.net

If I were 3000 miles closer, that couch would be mine! That's the Curse of the Internet: that it can't beam me up to Red Umbrella and other wonderful, unique, quirky and incredible consignment and resale shops like Dana's and Margaret's!

The focal point of your room has been established and also the furniture is in place, but it needs something more. That “something” is most likely going to arrive within the form of home decor accessories. A room can never be complete without the proper amount of accessories and additions to pull the look of a room with each other.
