Fourth in a series on this blog featuring this year's Petaluma Educational Foundation (Sonoma Country Life Sponsor) Major Impact Grants to schools is a $14,427 award to Wilson Elementary School (presented here to Principal/Superintendent Eric Hoppes and Teacher, Janice Garrigan by PEF board member Clark Rosen) for a school-wide Accelerated Education in Literacy and Math program.
The goal of this grant was to insure the ongoing use of an established Accelerated Reader Program throughout this K-6 country school of 202 students by adding an Accelerated Math (and science) companion program and the technical resources the school's dedicated teachers required to effectively manage the program.
Principal/Superintendent Hoppes said that the grant allowed Wilson School to 'get past the financial barrier that kept it from supporting and challenging its students.
In an emotionally moving letter to PEF that teacher, Janice Garrigan read aloud to PEF Board members at their January retreat, she said: "You are making a difference in kids lives and we are taking care of your efforts and using them prudently, successfully, enthusiastically and judiciously..."
There have been ten Major Impact Grants funded so far this year, with more extremely deserving programs throughout the city's schools awaiting funding from regional supporters, including Sonoma County corporations, mid-size and small, independently owned businesses, organizations and individuals.
