What's in your fridge? Though I'm a stalwart customer for stocking shelves at home with Clover organic milk, I was interested to read in this morning's Santa Rosa Press Democrat newspaper that Sonoma County's favorite family-owned Clover Stornetta Farms will next year start to make all of its dairy products free of genetically modified organisms.
Amidst some concerns in the industry that this bold move will deter customers from buying organic, it's a step forward for general standards of what consumers of all sorts of milk products have the right to expect. The Petaluma-based company will be the first dairy processor in the state to sell conventional GMO-free milk and “the first of any scale anywhere” to do so — according to a detailed report in the newspaper. Despite the fact that the Federal gov maintains that foods made with genetically modified organisms are safe to consume, Sonoma County voters will shortly put it to the vote whether to ban GMO crops in all unincorporated areas.
Does this mean that milk prices will go up? Yes. But Clover intends to absorb much of the initial cost of paying its dairy farmers more to produce purer milk, at least in the transitional period until the market speaks for itself.
Interesting times in the dairy industry and great to see Clo blaze a trail.
