The Petaluma Arts Center announces Floribunda, on view from October 16th through December 11th, 2016.
“Floribunda” is a celebration of all things floral and will feature the Hunt Institute’s 14th International Exhibition of Botanical Art & Illustration, with 36 artists from 9 countries showcasing works ranging from watercolor with gouache to relief engraving. The Hunt exhibition has been traveling for the past two years around the United States; the Petaluma stop is the final one on the tour.
Floribunda will also include three Bay Area artists – Aimee Baldwin, Evan Kolker, and Randy Strong – who create 3-dimensional representations of flowers.
“This exhibition is designed as a source of inspiration and an invitation to see the natural world around us in distinct ways, to illuminate the relationship between art and science,” says Exhibitions Manager Kim Chigi. “With Botany as one of the sciences, we are excited about the juxtaposition of traditional botanical illustration with the contemporary 3-dimensional creations, working in tandem, to explore the connections between the creativity of both artist and nature.”
To round out the Floribunda exhibition, the Petaluma Arts Center will present a variety of activities: an artists’ talk, studio workshops, and a botanical artist demonstration featuring Sonoma county artists of varying techniques ranging from graphite and watercolor to gouache.
The exhibition opens to the public on Sunday October 16 at 11:00 a.m.; the Opening Reception will be held on Saturday October 22 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
