The tale of Theodore Gier spans the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm I, early California entrepeneurial spirit, Prohibition, and anti-German sentiments in the aftermath of World War I. Integral in establishing Mt. Veeder's winemaking community, Gier was one of California's most successful vintners and wine merchants. An accompanying exhibit of artifacts from his wine operations will be on view. Saturday, November 22, 2025 6:30 to 9 pm Cost: $20 per person Click here for tickets!
Theodore Gier purchased the Mt. Veeder property in 1900, and completed the beautiful stone winery buildings in 1903 which are now home to Napa Valley's The Hess Collection Winery. He called this property the Sequoia Vineyard, and produced some of his most successful mountain wines under that brand. This same property was home to Gier's Sequoia Resort, where visitors from around the world came to play in the 'Napa Redwoods'. Regretfully, in 1930 Gier had fallen on hard times and was forced to sell his beloved mountain winery, vineyards and resort to The Christian Brothers.
