Drawn to the beaches reminiscent of his native Hawaii, legend in the Los Angeles world of commercial photography, the late Don Jim worked with Saul Bass and other notable graphic designers. During the 1960s, his album cover subjects included The Byrds, Deep Purple and Jimmy Cliff.
A surfer and a bodybuilder, Jim revealed the quintessential poetic abstractions of that particular world in these 1950s era vintage pieces - currently on display at Barry Singer Gallery at 7 Western Avenue in downtown Petaluma
For this photographer, the creation of a specific image was his main mission. Once satisfied that he’d achieved his intent, the majority of prints were filed and forgotten in pursuit of the next vision. Completely indifferent to exhibitions and recognition for his photographs, many have remained hidden from the world until now.
To celebrate this inaugural presentation of a small portion of Jim's exquisite legacy, Barry and Gretchen Singer will host a reception at their Gallery on Saturday April 3rd, 2010 from 4pm to 6pm.
"We are also featuring the work of renowned local photographer Morrie Camhi," says Gretchen.
"An exhibition of his work will run concurrently with Don Jim –
beginning February 27 through April 10. "Widows of both photographers
will be in attendance at the April 3rd reception."
Internationally renowned and exhibited as a social documentary photographer, Camhi’s most important series included AD:Vantage (Personal Ads), The Jews of Greece, The Eye of Conscience (Western farm-workers), The Prison Experience and documenting Christo’s Running Fence here in Sonoma County. “People are my main, my chosen emphasis,” avowed Camhi.
If you are in the area on April 3rd, plan a pit-stop at Barry Singer's Gallery, with no obligation to purchase, you are guaranteed a great soiree with Petaluma wine and artisan cheeses and a good chat with Southern Sonoma County's leading fine art photography dealers and fellow photo aficionados ! Do RSVP to Gretchen at 707 781 3200. I'll see you there.
