Phew, another scorcher here on the East Coast as temperatures reached record highs this post 4th July week and this morning's lobster pink skin serves as a stinging reminder to hydrate and stick to the shade.
Heading out of Boston and Cambridge (pictured here over the Charles River after an early dawn evacuation due to false fire alarm in the hotel!) in search of shady trees and cool waters at Walden Pond near Concord.
Plan to sneak in a literary history look-around at Louisa May A's place prior to a dip in Thoreau's once secluded pond.
Yesterday's expedition to the north of Boston produced the lobster look (in keeping with the regional theme), a delightful dip in the warm Atlantic, a hermit crab hunt in Marblehead's scenic coves and a rapid drive-through visit to Salem. Sorry to say the sea-side city of such infamous repute failed to cast much of a spell on me.
Further up the coast the ivy league prep schools and manicured mansions of Beverly and Manchester-on-sea put the record straight on the charms of coastal New England.
Wonder how the Queen handled the heat in New York this week as she officially declared the British Memorial Garden open on Manhattan? The hat and coat and proverbial handbag and all. The fewer the clothes the better here on the East right now, though I have to admire the Boston guys for their summer style quite unlike the sloppy California warm-weather looks.

I bet you have a new impression of what "hot" and "humidity" is on this journey. Hah!
