How often do kids these days have an unscheduled afternoon for messing around at the pond? In between back to back sports games, school projects and the ever increasing call of the Playstation or X Box, the simple, unstructured stuff of adolescent life passes many young people completely by.
Parents are either too afraid to let their youngsters out of their sight, or they haven't the time or inclination in their own over-achieving schedules to make a point of pottering around anywhere remotely far from the maddening crowd.
Memorial Day weekend posed a perfect opportunity for these Petaluma lads to laze around the pond in their swimmies, catching fish and sinking boats and figuring out the natural order of running with a pack for a couple of days. Every single bit as important as scoring a goal, making the first home run of the season, or scooping a neat set of straight A's on the last of the school year's report card.
