It’s no secret that craft beer in Sonoma County has a cult-like, following. Now in its second year, the Sonoma County Home Brewer’s Competition is a Mecca for craft brew aficionados and aspiring craft brewers alike.
Last year’s event saw over 60 home brewers compete for the title of the Best Brew and one lucky competitor, brewers Jeremy Konen and Joe Monostori, won the glory and their Mojo’s Chocolate Milk Stout was produced at 101 North Brewing Co. Mojo was distributed across Sonoma County and met with fan fare, selling every keg in a matter of a few months.... except for one special keg set aside just so anyone that hasn’t tried the winning brew can buy a pint at the event.
The 2nd annual competition takes place at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds to accommodate a more spacious layout, more attendees, more home brewers and a lot more beer shenanigans!
The grand prize remains the same — one lucky home brewer will get to brew their recipe at a commercial level under the guidance of 101 North’s brew master Joel Johnson. For attendees, over 60 different home brews expand beer tasting palates. As was seen last year, home brewing allows for inventive and unusual flavor profiles and offers a step outside of the usual tried and true craft brews we know and love.
Attendees may still grab a glass of their favorite local brew in the Heritage Salvage beer garden, aka “Cup’s Yard”. A $35 ticket price ($40 at the door) allows for unlimited tasting, to vote for the best of the bunch. The public’s vote will determine the top five best of show and a panel of beer experts will determine the grand prize winner. Voting will end at 3:30pm, with tasting continuing on to last call at 5:00pm.
Aside from exploration of home brew from across Sonoma County and beyond, attendees will be able to watch (and sample!) cooking with beer demos from Petaluma's own Laurie Figone, and heralded Beer Chef Sean Paxton. Plus, enjoy tasting and learning how to craft your own yummy beer snacks with Petaluma’s own Sonoma Spice Queen, Wind McAlister.
Sponsors Beer Belly Fermentation Supply of Windsor, will showcase home brewing equipment and demonstrations adjacent to the tasting area, while tNorCal Hops Alliance demonstrates hop growing practices. Wild Garden Farms is back with hop plants and herbs to add to your own home brewing repertoire. Enjoyable distractions abound, should attendees tire from the tedious work of sampling home brews, including music by the Dirty Red Barn Band, a Corn Hole Tournament and Beer Pong sponsored by Northbay Brewery Tours.
What's craft brew without good food? There will be something for everyone to enjoy, from gourmet sausages & hamburgers to Caribbean, Thai, Oysters and Haitian food and sweet treats. Local sponsors, Rocky & Rosie Chicken will be back with their food truck and offering classic beer pairings — chicken wings and delicious chicken sandwiches (which I sampled at Butter and Egg Days and give a thumbs up). Local cheese mongers will be on hand sampling artisan cheeses that pair well with beer, including favorites Valley Ford Cheese Company, Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese, Pug’s Leap Cheese and Nicasio Valley Cheese Company. Ask the cheese experts for recommendations on pairing cheeses on hand with home brews.
