The Back House Gallery at Heebe Jeebe, Petaluma, presents The Big Eyes Show ... (A Keane Tribute).
According to www.tribute.ca: "It all started in 1955 at a San Francisco art fair. A young artist named Margaret was desperately trying to get her paintings noticed when she met the devilishly handsome Walter Keane. She had studied at the Watkins Art Institute in the late 1940s, where the signature "Big Eyes" had begun to emerge in her work. Walter had studied in Berlin during the mid-1940s and would later say his observations of hungry, wide-eyed children there would inspire his life as a painter"
Margaret and Walter married the same year that they met. The movie Big Eyes (2014) by director Tim Burton is based on the lies and controversy that surrounded their relationship, despite a seemingly happy marriage. It took an eventual divorce and legal battle after 20 years for Margaret to publicly announce and prove in court that it was she who was the "Big Eyes" artist, not Walter.
An Artists Reception for all sorts of super cool community "Big Eyes" interpretations takes place Saturday March 21st from 7pm to 9pm.
The show's title is intended to inspire ideas and impressions.
"We asked artists to submit works reflecting these thoughts and ideas as a starting point," said Heebe Jeebe's Drew Washer.
The Gallery is located at 46 Kentucky Street in historic downtown Petaluma.
