Seven dollars and 19 cents is the most I have ever paid for a loaf of bread. Petaluma Market has recently started stocking Marin County-made M.H Bread & Butter's monster loaves and by all accounts, the heavy-weight wonders are flying off the shelves.
Once I had one in my hands, the size and scope of the organic Country Levain was considerably more substantial than its competitor's loaves, prices in the five to six dollar range.
Living large, I decided to give one a whirl and see if it made any sense to splash out on the daily dough.
Not only was it super delicious and dense, but one loaf went a long way with hefty sandwiches for four twice as well as slicings for evening meals both days. That last, end chunk went down very well the following day with a generous spread of Point Reyes Blue Cheese and a slice of one of my neighbor Judy's juicy beef tomatoes.
