War Horse - Brilliant Stage Interpretation of Master Storyteller Michael Morpurgo's Powerful Tale
Twelve-year-old Dom was as surprised as I to find ourselves on the front row of the New London Theater for a bird's eye vantage point of the smash-hit show that's now taking Broadway, as well as the West End by storm.
To say that we were in the thick of it would be an understatement. And when the setting happens to be the death rattling battlefront of World War I, a front row seat equates to smoke and gun powder, a quickened heartbeat, rearing horses and a view through the barbed wire of a darkened 'No Man's Land'.
Thanks to his Auntie Lindsey, UK-based primary school teacher and literary lover, critter-keeper Dom has long since been a huge fan of Britain's award-winning, former Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo's 20 plus books, many of which feature animals as main characters.
It didn't take much persuasion to pick a performance of War Horse as a special treat for our last night in London. And what a treat it was. An unforgettable story of the most enduring friendship throughout what was the worst of wars. Inventive and exhilarating, War Horse sweeps the audience along in a wave of raw emotion, all the while enthralled by the life-sized, man-powered puppetry of beautiful and utterly believable equine beasts.
Given rave reviews and five stars by every major press review in London, War Horse is now stateside. If you're planning a trip to New York, be sure to make a booking for this remarkable production.
Dom and I were so entranced by the workings of the War Horse we jumped from our seats at the sound of gun shots. We hadn't noticed a group of British soldiers in full trench combat gear, quite suddenly squatting by our side. If War Horse ever makes it to the West Coast and I certainly do hope so, I'd like to view this spectacle from a balcony seat. It's a work of art and should be viewed from all angles.
