Petaluma's 150th Happy Birthday Theme is all-encompassing for this weekend's annual Butter and Eggs Day community extravaganza.
So much so that there will be just as much attention on those darling little cow dungs being flung around outside of McNear's historic saloon, as the more traditional Cutest Little Chick Contest on Kentucky Street!
Confusing all my non-resident readers no doubt. If you have never had the grand fortune to pay a visit to P'Town, you'll have no idea just how exciting it gets on our city streets come Butter and Eggs Day each April!
And in celebration of all things dairy-heritage, the great Petaluma Cow Chip Throwing Contest is undoubtedly right up there with our Southern Sonoma County reputation as World Wrist Wrestling center of the universe!
Not that the Butter and Eggs Day cow dung hurling competition takes the chip for global contest status - that ultra-ag-elite title belongs to another self-described 'hoe-down, one-horse hamlet' : Beaver Oklahoma. Boy, that must be something for my fellow Petalumans to keep in mind. Hurl Daisy's dung as far as Tall Toad Music and you may be on your way out to the Mid-West for a mighty fine meeting of the chip-tactical minds and moo-poo paparazi gathering in Beaver!
Now don't be poo-pooing this as a strange way to have a good time. Cow chips are actually not all that offensive when it comes to comparative dumping ground. Used since the early Petaluma settlers first set up homesteads here in the green valley, cow chips came in most handy as a comforting, domestic heat source during short, hard winters.
And if you are thinking of entering, do keep in mind that we're pretty Petalumacentric around here after all, and any chips chucked around outside of McNear's on Saturday, really should be local.
