Amidst the call for giving this season, there are lots of people (young and old) within our communities who've never known a holiday gift to come their way.
A rally call on Facebook from Petaluma High School parent Brenda Martin (fellow mom of three sons) reminded me of the number of students in our midst who fall into the homeless category, whether they are living in a shelter or temporary housing, couch surfing or sleeping in a tent or in the back of a car.
Brenda is asking for school families, friends and neighbors and alumni to drop off gift cards to the PHS front office to be dispersed amongst the most neediest of students this holiday season by December 7th.
It struck me, as I picked out gift cards to drop off that my readers might be inclined to do the same and drop off to the school of their choice. There are hundreds of students within the Petaluma School District who are in need in this way. Such a simple gesture and yet, to think that a few dollars on a gift card may well equate to a new pair of shoes, a pair of jeans, something practical or fun or even food and toiletries — is so easy to do for someone we don't know.
Please drop off gift cards to PHS front office in an envelope marked Mrs Jackson.
If you're dropping off to a different school, check in at the front office and let them know your intention for your gift cards.
What a wonderful grassroots effort and it's so encouraging to see so many shares on Facebook and such a response within our community to keep on helping others despite there being so many needs in Sonoma County right now.
