“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” —

For one who isn't a big fan of traffic jams and crowded parks, Marin County Fair makes the getting there (and back) so much more fun with its new shuttle bus system.
We were on the first bus out immediately after the fireworks finished their sparkly grand finale over the lake at the Civic Center and back to our car and up the freeway to Petaluma within a half an hour.
I'd picked the evening before Independence Day to attend the fair so that I might tie in a visit to friends organizing and hosting the 50th anniversary commemorative exhibit of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Marin County and a concert by the unstoppable English Reggae and pop band of my youth, UB40.
Marin County Fair celebrates the half century of The Summer of Love, this year, closing tonight, 4th July. If you've nothing planned today, the fireworks are fab — oysters, craft ale, all the terrific art and jams and pickles and endless categories of well made things make for a good, old fashioned outing to forget about the rest of the country's current goings-on.
I enjoyed all the patriotic clothing and the tie-dye and there were more than a few original Summer of Love Marinites out and about in the fair.
Full post on Renaissance Pleasure Faire commemorative exhibit to follow, later this week . . .
Have a happy and safe Independence Day, friends.
