Zazu Kitchen in Sebastopol has been on my dining out radar for a while. Sunday supper sorted my hankering for some West Country "Snout to Tail" table time with the family.
The stylish and spacious Barlow District is a super foodie destination in itself, though it would be good to see some of the still-to-let buildings rented and rolling out some more retail options to soon bolster the food, wine, coffee and beer offerings in this modern approach to an artisan/ag center.
Homemade house pasta is a big draw for Zazu diners and it's cleverly incorporated into menu items such as the grilled flatiron steak topped with Point Reyes Blue Cheese ravioli (above) with a heaping portion of chard.
Bolinas black cod in broth with clams and toasted bread — my pick, hearty though a delicate fusion of freshness and favor.
Lasagna to rival Nonna's. Not all about this supreme sauce, but almost, the kitchen crew at Zazu certainly does know its way around a reduction. That's perfectly roasted garlic on the side.
Gemelli with a lamb ragu and pecorino. Another winner.
Dom's "Dirty Burger" with liberty duck pate, bacon, caramelized onion and cider vinegar chicharrones. Should have ordered fries on the side. We spotted a cone on the next table and they did look delicious.
The only disappointment was a rather puny salad of young lettuces for the princely sum of $13.50.
Service, I'd heard, tends on the slow side, though given the fresh range, slow cooking and and quality of fare, our reasonable wait was worth it.
Though we didn't partake in any of the lip smackin' cocktail libations this time, I'll definitely make a pit-stop for appetizers and a Lavender Bee's Knees one summer evening.
Decor is chic and super casual — the priciest place I've eaten at without a tablecloth.
Located at 6770 McKInley #150, in the Barlow district, Sebastopol, Zazu Kitchen is open every day of the week except Tuesdays, when it takes care of its meat production.
Call 707 523 4814. Great for a late supper if you're a night owl. There aren't too many stellar Sonoma County restaurants serving through midnight on Friday and Saturdays (10pm the rest of the week).
