Dig the Dirt? Help Install a New Living Learning Lab Garden at the Petaluma Campus of the SRJC, Saturday May 9th

The SRCJ Petaluma Campus garden design was created by students in Daily Acts' Permaculture Design Course

The Santa Rosa Junior College Petaluma Campus is ripping out its water-thirsty lawn for a Living Learning Lab Garden.

In place of grass will be a space where students are able to learn professional landscaping skills, display sculpture installations, study ethnobotany, create botanical drawings, discover complex ecological interactions, chat with friends beneath ripe persimmons and glean for the food bank on campus.

You are invited to help make this vision a reality.

Daily Acts is  collaborating with SRJC students and staff, community members and the City of Petaluma to transform a water-thirsty lawn on the Petaluma SRJC campus into a water-wise, edible food forest that grows food while mimicking natural forest processes. 

The first phase of installation taking place on Saturday May 9th, 2015, features learning how to build swales and rain gardens to infiltrate rainwater into the garden, as well as sheet mulching the lawn to prepare it for planting.

In autumn, a “classroom” structure (a dome shaped arbor with benches) and a beautiful array of water-wise and edible plants will be installed. 

The interactive, ecological landscape is set toserve as a demonstration garden for the community, while providing food for students and food for thought. 

 

The Living Learning Lab will teach students and community members how to thoughtfully design, install, maintain, and connect with the built environment in a way that welcomes in natural processes. Intimate interactions with this type of garden could be the catalyst for a whole generation of progressive land stewards and permaculture leaders!

Daily Acts plans to create a new model for schools everywhere to replace vast lawns with thought-provoking, educational and productive gardens.

When: Saturday, May 9th, 2015 from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM

Where: SRJC Petaluma Campus located at 680 Sonoma Mountain Parkway, Petaluma
(Workshops will be held on the back section of campus right in front of the gym and across from the library. Turn onto Campus Circle and loop around to parking lot 3 or 4)  

Kids are  welcome and refreshments provided. After registration, you'll receive  an email with a free parking pass and a map/directions.
