Students who live in Sonoma and Marin Counties and who are pursuing careers in agriculture are invited to apply for up to $10,000 in scholarships offered by the Sonoma County Fair. Completed applications are due by 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 29th, 2015 at the Sonoma County Fair Entry Office.
Proceeds from the Fair’s annual Hall of Flowers Grand Opening event fund the scholarships awards, which serve to encourage and promote the agricultural industry among the North Bay’s next generation of leaders.
Students interested in applying for the scholarships must be high school graduates planning to attend Santa Rosa Junior College or a four-year university, and reside in Sonoma or Marin County. The awarded scholarship amounts will range between $250 and $2,500 per application. Applications will be pre-screened and judged on neatness and completeness. The top finalists selected from the four-year university applications will also be required to participate an in-person interview.
“The Fair board and staff are committed to protecting our agricultural heritage and sustaining the industry. We are proud to offer opportunities for local youth who are interested in becoming our future agricultural leaders,” says Katie Fonsen Young, Interim Fair Manager.
The scholarship awards are funded through ticket sales from the annual Hall of Flowers Grand Opening event, which is scheduled for Thursday, July 23. The business social and fundraiser offers guests an exclusive sneak peak at the spectacular Hall of Flowers before the building is open for public viewing. Guests are invited to peruse the garden displays themed “Barnyard Blossoms” while enjoying an evening of fine Sonoma County wines and hors d’oeuvres.
Applications for 2015 Hall of Flowers scholarships are available at the Sonoma County Fair Entry Office, at the Santa Rosa Junior College Agriculture Department, and online at www.sonomacountyfair.com/fair/scholarship.php.
