Petaluma Arts Center is proud to present its 4th annual Youth Arts Exhibit, opening March 14th, 2015. The energy and creativity of over 75 budding young artists fills the Arts Center this spring, featuring artwork by talented and expressive Petaluma-area young people in grades K – 12.
Cinnabar Elementary School students are submitting peer-juried “best of each grade level” jewelry, and McNear Elementary School students are to exhibit a collection of dolls made as part of their studies relating to Black History Month. A family collage and doll-making station takes place during the opening reception, led by Geri Olson and a mural-painting activity led by Jason Holtz.
Petaluma Arts Center is also honored to feature the work of one of Petaluma’s highly respected young artists, Phoebe Washer. Phoebe was 20 years old when she passed away and already an accomplished artist with several shows under her belt and a substantial portfolio of work. Phoebe's legacy is cherished by all in the community and continues to be admired for its multi-layered themes, originality and imagination.
The exhibition is in conjunction with National Youth Arts Month (YAM) and a national youth arts movement. The Arts Center is excited to be participating in the state and national art spheres. The arts are an essential, valuable component in education for the 21st century; however, the visual arts are consistently found at the bottom of priority lists for educational funding. The Petaluma Arts Center proudly supports the arts and actively advocates for the arts at the local level for all ages.
On Sunday March 15th, from 6-8pm, poets aged 16 – 75 will read from “Changing Harm to Harmony: Bullies & Bystanders Project”, anthology of poetry, letters and other writings edited by Marin County Poet Laureate Joe Zaccardi. Information will be provided by non-profits working in the field. Sample poem titles include “Fat Kid,” by Peter Schmitt, “The Invisible Boy,” by Paul Sohar, “Such a Pretty Face,” by CB Follett and “Perfect Target,” by Rebecca Foust. Come experience this heartfelt and beautifully produced anthology and meet representatives from Mentor Me, Guided To Safety, and Severson Sisters, all of which support local youth.
Art Shapes the World: Youth Arts Exhibit can be seen at the Petaluma Arts Center March 14th through April 5th, 2015, with opening reception on March 14th from 4-6pm. The exhibition and events will be held at the Petaluma Arts Center, 230 Lakeville St., Petaluma, CA 94952. The Arts Center gallery is open Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm and entry is donation-based.
