Wine Spectator's number one ranked wine for 2011 in its annual round up of 100 of the year's most exciting vintages puts the Petaluma Gap's indie micro-region in the international spotlight.
Dan Kosta and Michael Browne of Sonoma County's celebrated Kosta Browne winemaking partnership crafted their outstanding 2009 Kosta Brown Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast with grapes grown in 37 coveted vineyard blocks of Gap's Crown, positioned here on the very western edge of Sonoma Mountain, as well as the world class Pinot Noir fruit from premium, family-run Petaluma Gap 32 acre Terra de Promissio vineyards and a third harvest of coastal fruit from the west county's Walala Vineyards.
Though the Petaluma Gap is garnishing increased attention and a stellar reputation as a distinctive growing region for stunning cool climate Pinot and Chardonnay fruit within the Sonoma Coast AVA, the wines that more and more top producers are making from fruit sourced from over 40 vineyards in the wind and fog funnel zone here in the south county around Petaluma and neighboring, north, western Marin are clearly making their own statement, as seen here in Wine Spectator and other preeminent rankings.
