For the ordinary folk, there's plentiful fun to be had as a mere mortal at Rivertown Revival. Here's some nifty costuming tips adapted from my regular South County Notebook Column in the Argus Courier:
Steam-punk-style fashion is sweeping the region’s hottest seasonal draws for arts and cultural events and Rivertown Revival’s participant outfitting follows this inventive flair for turn of the century Victorian garb-meets time machine merriment and madness. Though such creative costuming is optional at this fantastic, free fundraising event for the development of a River Heritage Center, it’s certainly a lot more fun to play the part.
Think top hats and vests for the guys, old cotton shirts with collars cut off, flight goggles, silver and brass buttons, leather boots, long socks, brass cogs sewn onto an old suit jacket, a pocket watch, brass telescope, compass. Tea-dying old white cotton garments is a quick trick for a vintage feel.
Bustles (plastic coated wire, wire cutters and electrical tape), petticoats, corsets (as outerwear) and layered, skirts make a great foundation for a Rivertown gal’s Victorian ensemble. Parasol, boots, old brooches, long chain necklaces, bloomers and lace gloves complete this futuristic/Victorian look.

I created a video to help promote this wonderful event.
