New California state law is making it mandatory that all dental offices must have an amalgam separator installed in their offices by this December. An amalgam separator is a water filtration system that collects amalgam pieces containing mercury from silver fillings so that they can be recycled rather than enter the sewer system.

Indian born and educated, Dr. Permalla trained as a Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco and following this, also completed her residency at University of the Pacific. “My husband and I chose Petaluma as the perfect small city to settle down, raise a family, open a practice and be a part of a great community,” she said. The couple has a three-year-old son.

Breaking with tradition in typical dental facility layout, Permalla Dental Care provides an unconventional approach to patient consultation and scheduling. “Our closed room consultation area has a couch and a coffee table so that I am able to discuss treatment plans and options in a more informal, lounge-like setting,” explained Dr. Permalla. Two, side by side dental care treatment rooms are managed by the doctor and her dental assistant.
“It is important to me to get to know my patients and their families by providing a complete care program for each individual,” said Dr. Permalla, who performs all dental screening and cleaning procedures, as well as full treatments, herself.
