There are lots of benefits from being a daily market shopper, one of which is always running into a story source for Southern Sonoma Country Life.
Today's brief visit to Whole Foods in Petaluma was no exception. Just as I'd whizzed around the produce aisle for some leeks (no pun intended) and grabbed a can of cannellini beans for my favorite go-to (while watching soccer game) oven-baked chicken casserole, family-style dinner, I spotted my friend Felice in a spiffy, white chefs coat, handing out samples of Petaluma's Lisa Littell's new multi whole grain product, intriguingly named Soo Foo .
My house of men can't get enough of the wholesome wild rice medley I've been whipping up a couple times a week, so I thought I'd give this U.S. grown version with lentils a try.
"Soo-Foo (Super Good Food) is carried at Petaluma Market, Whole Foods, Oliver's and other gourmet markets. It is like a wild rice blend-but better because it has 3 different kinds of lentils, so it is a complete protein," explained Felice. "It cooks great
in a rice cooker or stovetop, and my kids even love it as a hot cereal with soy milk,
cinnamon, and brown sugar."
It certainly is a great value for $2.99 a bag considering that all of the crops are grown in the USA. I pre-cooked it as a side to the chicken/cannellini/leek casserole and it went down a treat. Even though the Giants weren't winning. Might have been boosted by the big win for Petaluma JV boys soccer team against rival Casa Grande this evening. More on that when I've downloaded my mom-in-that-stands action shots.
Locally (well, San Francisco is within the locavore's circle) produced foods are hot. Grab a back of Soo Foo when you are out an about on the grocery haul. I would recommend cooking with chicken or fish stock for extra flavor. Will get back to you if I succeed in getting any one of my sons to sample the breakfast recipe. Sounds good to me.

Have you tried Farro yet? Most delicious.
