Despite all best intentions to blog in the big apple,my visit whizzed by in a classic new York minute. Will have to report back when home in the bay area, except to ask why is it that I seem to be the only passenger aboard my united flight with the unfortunate allocation of boarding number 4?
Could it be that airmile flights warrant having to dash down the runway, Barney's carrier bag flapping in the wind after everyone and his brother have been seated? It certainly seemed that way as I sat posting this blog into my iphone whilst first class, premium business, super global exclusive, then section 1, 2, 3 and God knows what other categories of elitist passengers queued up to get on board before four or five apologetically 'ordinary' travelers were finally allowed to join the party in poor old seating section 4. Felt like I should have been given a consolation prize for sitting it out so patiently. I don't know what, but maybe a bite to eat after five hours in the air might have been nice! Talk about a new class system, there's really nothing quite like steerage on a cross-country flight.
Having been the lucky winner of the seat right next to the flight's only toddler on my red-eye outward bound (of which, I maintained extraordinarily degrees of consideration and good humor seeings as I have flown with not just one, but two and three little boys in my own early parenting period), I'd hoped on the return flight I'd find America's skinniest frequent-flyer as my neighbor. No wedging necessary. None of that "who gets the armrest" quandry and figuring out how to avoid thigh contact.
Needless to say, by the time I'd made it down the aisle to seating area number four, there was little doubt as to which empty seat was mine. Right by the man with the biggest back side in New York and an extremely grumpy looking reaction to the fact that I'd showed up on the scene to spoil his hopes of spreading out his ample girth onto an additional seat.
It's just a matter of endurance, really isn't it. Focus on a novel, take a cat-nap, study the woman to the left's spread sheet for tomorrow's SF Team Meeting. Try not to notice how many snack-packs were being consumed as he elbowed me in the ribs whilst prizing open plastic packaging.
One day I'll be posting from business class, I'm bound and determined......Better had keep building those air miles!
