There's no escaping the fact that Petaluma Gap wines are officially on the radar of Sonoma Coast excellence, judging by the overwhelming representation of "Best of Class" award winners in the newly announced 2008 North of the Gate Wine Competition.
An impressive ten percent of the "Best of Class" winners from all Napa, Mendocino, the Russian River, Sonoma Coast, Carneros and beyond were red wine wonders from the cool-climate micro-region of Petaluma.
Plus, Red Wine Sweepstakes winner Adobe Road Winery also scooped the prestigious award for its 2005 Sonoma County Zinfandel, which has taken the "Best of Class" in Zins $22 and over.
Not surprisingly, hoot and Linda Smith over at Kastania Vineyards, at the gateway to Wine Country in Petaluma took "Best of Class" and a Gold in the Pinot Noir $30 and over category for their Proprietors Reserve, Estate Grown 2006 Pinot. A Gold was also awarded to Kastania for the popular 2006 Estate Gorwn 2006 Proprietors Blend in the Red Meritage and Bordeaus Blend category.
Adobe Road Winery, another prominent Petaluma Gap member, scooped Gold and "Best of Class" for Syrah/Shiraz $25 and over with the 2005 Sonoma County Syrah. Adobe Road also won a Gold for its 2005 Sonoma County Zinfandel.
Bronze medals were awarded to Adobe Road for its 2006 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, Adobe Road's 2006 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Rockin' H Ranch's 2006 Gauthier Pinot Noir.
Next time you are out and about and fancy a spot of wine tasting without having to head over to Sonoma, Napa or further up North, stop in at award winning Kastania or Adobe Road and stock up on a case or two of those stellar award winners before they sell out. There's nothing like a gold medal winner from your own 'hood to serve up for a special dinner.
