Heading into San Francisco this Labor Day holiday weekend, you absolutely must make a detour into Union Square to visit the stunning artistic legacy of the late and immensely-missed Bay Area photographer Debra McClinton.
Not of this world, Debra's dreamy visions of still life shots, beautiful black and white portraits, luscious fashion and lifestyle photography leads us through an enchanting exhibition of her impressive career behind the camera.
Hosted by Gallery 291, the exclusive exhibition "Celebrating the Photography of Debra McClinton (1968-2007)" is, for the next three days only, located at 291 Geary Street at Powell, Floor 5, in the very heart of San Francisco.
Thursday night's gorgeous opening reception was swamped in sultry ninety degree heat with Debra's many friends and family and photo/advertising community colleagues in attendance from all over the country.
As Debra would have turned forty this summer, Thursday night's wonderful gathering of her extended community of confidantes and long-time admirers was as much a toast to an absent friend as a eulogy of her incredibly meticulous compositions.
Photographs selected for the exhibition by Debra's close friends and colleagues including my good friend and Petaluma-based commercial lifestyle photographer Stephanie Rausser, span Debra's career and include several that have never before been published. The show and limited edition image sales are made possible by the generous donations of time, materials, or images by Alex & Becca Ashton of ZipFly Design, Ed Carey of Gallery 291, Griff Williams of Urban Digital Color, the McClinton family, Stephanie Rausser, Bart Nagel, Kate Powers, and Tony and Frankie Ray Hollifield.
"Debra's photographs showed beautifully at Gallery 291," said Steph, "and it was great to have so many people who loved her in one room celebrating her photographs and her life. Though the purpose of the show is to promote and publicize Debra's legacy of exquisite work, it has been the rare opportunity for the photographers she inspired and for her many friends to be able to purchase an affordable print which will resonate amongst her community for years to come.
For the lovely Debra's distinctive visions of a harmonious world will grace the homes and studios of some of the greatest creatives in the Bay Area, offering an enticing window into her original ideals of beauty for all to behold.
