A Celebration of Wine & Community
Members of The Petaluma Museum Association were delighted when Jim McCormick, owner of the California Wine Museum, agreed to loan artifacts and co-curate a special viticulture exhibit, the central attraction of the Museum's upcoming Petaluma Pairings Fall 2014 Celebration.
Working with Paula Freund, art historian and former PMA board member, Jim's exhibit will chronologically document the history of grape growing and wine production in Petaluma from its beginnings in the second half of the nineteenth century through Prohibition and up to the present day resurgence of our local wine industry under the influence of the Petaluma Gap Winegrowers Alliance.
Jim and Paula began their research organizing interviews of Petalumans whose property holds historic viticulture significance: Angelo and Buck Sangiacomo of Sangiacomo Family Vineyards; Ana Keller of Keller Estate Winery; Al Marcucci, owner of the property formerly occupied by the Raffaelli Brothers Winery and Gigi Hendricks of Rockin' H Ranch Vineyard. The interviews were conducted by Mayor Glass and his videographer, Kaye Chandler and will be a vital part of the exhibit.
Most of the exhibit's artifacts will be from the California Wine Museum, but treasures have also been donated by the wine scholar, Gail Unzelman; historian, Frank Sternad and rancher, Al Marcucci. The Petaluma Historical Library & Museum will be contributing its own collection of vintage cooperage tools which were recently conserved by Robert Long’s Antique Refinishing and expertly repaired by master woodworker, Michael Cullen.

Cooperage Demonstration
French Master Cooper, Yann Guigen, will demonstrate the art of traditional barrel building. Yann advised the Petaluma Historical Library & Museum on the value of its extensive, vintage cooperage tool collection and will be using some of the tools in his demonstration. Thanks to Barrel Builders, this event is free and includes admission to the viticulture exhibit.
